Dartmouth vs Colgate (Game Summary and Press Release)

27 Feb

HAMILTON, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team opened the season on Saturday at 19th-ranked Colgate and earned a 9-6 win to start 1-0 for the first time in two years. The loss was the first of the year for the Raiders and dropped the team to 2-1.

With the game tied 5-5 after the third quarter, the Big Green went to work on offense in the fourth. Senior Drew Tunney (Greenwich, Conn.) scored his second goal of the game to give the team a 6-5 lead with 9:54 left in the game. Colgate tied the score a minute later, but it would be the last goal for the Raiders in the contest.

Dartmouth tallied the last three goals to turn a 6-6 tie into a 9-6 victory. All three of the goals were scored by a different Big Green athlete. SophomoreMike Olentine (Princeton, N.J.) broke the tie with his second goal of the game. Junior Nikki Dysenchuk (Darien, Conn.) added his second score of the contest with five minutes left to push the lead to 8-6. The final goal came on juniorChris Costabile‘s (Sykesville, Md.) first score of the year off an assist from senior Colin Delaney (Darien, Conn.).

Colgate outshot the Big Green in the game, 41-26. The Raiders put 22 of their 41 shots on goal, but senior Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) lived up to the preseason hype he received as the NEILA Preseason Goalie of the Year. He made 16 saves against Colgate, which also moved him into 10th all-time on the Dartmouth career saves list. He now has 391 saves in his career. Peter Harter ’70 is ninth with 415. Against the Raiders, Campbell made five saves in the second and third quarters.

The Big Green had six players score a goal and three with two goals. Olentine, Tunney and Dysenchuk each had two goals and Costabile, sophomore Brendan Rotanz (Westport, Conn.) and sophomore Patrick Resch (Flourtown, Pa.) each recorded one.

Dartmouth trailed in the game, 2-1 after the first quarter, but outscored Colgate, 2-1, in the second to push the game to a 3-3 tie at halftime. Each team scored two goals in the third, which led to the Big Green’s dominating fourth to earn the victory.

The Big Green host their first home game of the season on Saturday, March 3, when Sacred Heart comes to Scully-Fahey Field for a 2:30 p.m. game.
